When the 2026 sales land
Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30, 2026. VPN providers don't wait for those dates. When we checked official pricing pages on October 29, 2026, both NordVPN and Surfshark already had Black Friday labels on their plans. In practice, the "Black Friday price" is often a promotion that runs for weeks, so you don't have to rush.
That gives you time to do the math. Long-term VPN plans are where the biggest headline discounts sit, and where the biggest surprises hide: the renewal charge, the add-ons you never use, and refund rules that differ depending on where you paid.
Judge a VPN deal by three numbers: what you pay up front, what you pay at the first renewal, and how many months the first payment actually covers. The per-month figure in the banner is a marketing average, not a bill.
The 10-point checklist
Work through these before you enter a card number. Most take a minute or two on the provider's checkout page.
- 1. Find the renewal price in writing.Look for "renews at" or "then autorenews at" next to the plan. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN all printed a renewal figure beside their long-term plans when we checked. Surfshark's pricing page only said you'd pay the "applicable renewal price" and pointed to a separate terms page, which didn't show figures in our check. If you can't find the number, treat that as a warning sign. Don't assume it.
- 2. Add up the full term, bonus months included."2 years + 3 months" means the first charge covers 27 months. Divide the up-front total by the real number of months, then add at least one renewal year to see the cost over three years or more.
- 3. Ask what the "% off" is measured against.Discount percentages compare the deal to a reference price the provider chooses. On NordVPN's page, the struck-through total for the Basic 2-year plan ($312.93) equals the renewal rate stretched over 27 months, which is how a $94.23 charge becomes "69% off." The arithmetic is correct. It just doesn't measure savings against anything you'd actually pay elsewhere.
- 4. Count your devices.NordVPN's plans covered 10 devices at once. Surfshark advertised unlimited devices on paid plans. ExpressVPN's tiers ranged from 10 to 14, and Proton VPN Plus covered 10. Count phones, laptops, tablets, TVs and family members before you pay for a higher tier just for device slots.
- 5. Check the refund window and who handles it.Most major providers offer 30 days on direct purchases. CyberGhost listed 45 days on its longer plans and 14 on monthly. If you buy through Apple's App Store, the provider usually can't refund you: Apple decides. Our refund guide covers the details.
- 6. Decide now what happens at renewal.Long-term VPN plans renew automatically by default. Surfshark's billing terms say it emails customers 30 days before a renewal (monthly plans excepted). Don't rely on remembering. See how to turn off auto-renew at the major providers.
- 7. Price out the bundle separately.A password manager, cloud storage or identity insurance can be useful. But a higher tier usually means a higher renewal price too. Price the VPN-only tier first, then decide whether the extras are worth the difference every year.
- 8. Expect tax on top.NordVPN noted that sales tax may apply. Surfshark noted VAT may apply. ExpressVPN said it adds sales tax at checkout where applicable. Your final charge can be higher than the banner.
- 9. Re-check jurisdiction and audits.A deal doesn't make a provider more trustworthy. Look for a recent, independent no-logs assessment and read what it actually covered. Our guide to interpreting no-logs audits explains what to look for.
- 10. Choose your payment route on purpose.Paying on the provider's website usually gives you the provider's refund policy and account controls. Paying through an app store gives you that store's rules, which are often stricter. Some payment methods carry their own exclusions: Proton VPN's refund page excludes bank transfer and cash payments.
Total cost of ownership: a worked example
Here's one real plan, priced three ways. These figures come from NordVPN's official pricing page as listed on October 29, 2026, for the Basic tier in US dollars, before tax. We chose NordVPN only because it prints both the introductory and renewal prices clearly. This isn't a recommendation, and prices can change at any time, so confirm at checkout.
| Path | How it's billed | Total for 39 months | Effective per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-year deal, renew once | $94.23 for the first 27 months, then $139.08 for the next 12 | $233.31 | about $5.98 |
| 1-year deal, renew twice | $74.85 for the first 15 months, then $139.08 per year twice | $353.01 | about $9.05 |
| Month to month | $14.99 every month | $584.61 | $14.99 |
Source: NordVPN pricing page, listed October 29, 2026. Totals are our arithmetic from those listed prices, excluding sales tax. Thirty-nine months is used so every path covers the same span.
Three lessons fall out of this table:
- The renewal is where the cost lives. In the 2-year path, the single renewal year ($139.08) costs more than the entire first 27 months ($94.23). The intro period works out to $3.49 a month. The renewal works out to about $11.59 a month, roughly 3.3 times as much.
- Longer intro terms beat shorter ones, if you'll keep using the VPN. The 1-year path renews sooner, so you pay the full rate for more of the span.
- Monthly billing is only cheap if you'll stop soon. For a trip or a short project, a month or two can beat a multi-year commitment. For ongoing use, it's the most expensive route by far.
The same pattern shows up elsewhere. ExpressVPN's Basic plan listed $83.72 for the first 28 months, then $99.95 a year. Proton VPN Plus listed $83.76 for the first 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months. Proton's renewal is modest in dollar terms, but the yearly cost still doubles after the intro period. Our renewal price explainer compares these side by side.
Run the numbers yourself: up-front total, plus one renewal, divided by the total months. If that blended figure is still a fair price for what you need, the deal is good. If it only looks good before renewal, set a calendar reminder or pick a shorter term.
Bundles and add-ons
Holiday banners often lead with the top tier, because a big reference price produces a big discount percentage. On October 29, 2026, NordVPN's Black Friday banner advertised up to 78% off plus 3 extra months. The 78% figure matched its Complete 2-year plan, not Basic. Complete adds anti-malware, an ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage, according to the plan comparison. Its renewal was listed at $219.48 a year, against $139.08 for Basic. The Prime tier adds identity theft and cyber extortion insurance and credit monitoring, and its renewal was listed at $296.28 a year.
ExpressVPN takes a similar approach. Its Advanced and Pro tiers add a password manager and identity theft coverage. Pro also includes a dedicated IP, and the device allowance rises from 10 to 12 to 14.
None of this makes bundles bad. If you were going to pay for a password manager anyway, a bundle can be cheaper than buying the pieces separately. Just compare it against what you actually use, and remember that the bundle renews at bundle prices. If you're mostly interested in malware blocking, read our look at whether NordVPN's Threat Protection can replace antivirus first.
Add-ons bought at checkout may not be covered by the refund promise. Surfshark's refund policy lists Dedicated IP and Alternative ID as non-refundable options. If you think you might ask for a refund, skip the extras until the refund window has passed.
A discount doesn't change the fundamentals
The provider's legal base, ownership and audit record matter just as much in November as they do in March. A few reminders:
- Ownership. Several big brands share parent companies. NordVPN and Surfshark merged under one holding company in 2022 and say they operate independently. For other multi-brand owners, see our VPN ownership explainer. Switching between sister brands doesn't spread your trust across separate companies.
- Audits are snapshots. NordVPN says its sixth no-logs assessment, by Deloitte Lithuania, ran from November 10 to December 12, 2025. Surfshark lists Deloitte no-logs reviews from 2023 and 2025. Each one tells you how systems looked during that period. It doesn't guarantee the future. Our list of audited no-logs VPNs tracks this.
- Business model. Deep intro discounts depend on renewals and upsells. Knowing how VPN companies make money helps you read the offer.
A simple way to decide
- Confirm you need a VPN at all. If your main worry is café Wi-Fi or online shopping, read do I need a VPN? and our guide to what a VPN protects while you shop.
- Shortlist on trust and features, not price. Start with our best VPN ranking for 2026 and pick two or three that fit your devices and uses.
- Price the VPN-only tier over 36+ months using the method above, including one renewal.
- Buy directly if you might want a refund, and test the VPN properly within the window: your streaming apps, your banking sites, your work tools.
- Set the renewal decision now. Either turn off auto-renew right away, which usually keeps your service until the term ends, or add a calendar reminder a few weeks before the renewal date.
Frequently asked questions
When are Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30, 2026. Many VPN providers start their holiday pricing weeks earlier. NordVPN and Surfshark already showed Black Friday labels on their pricing pages on October 29, 2026.
Is a 2-year VPN plan worth it on Black Friday?
It can be, if you'll keep using the VPN for most of the term. Add the up-front charge to at least one renewal year and divide by the total months. If that blended monthly cost suits you, the longer plan usually beats shorter ones. If you're unsure, pay directly so you can use the refund window.
Why does my VPN cost so much more after the first term?
The headline price is an introductory rate. After the first term, most plans renew at the provider's standard rate. On NordVPN's Basic plan, listed October 29, 2026, the intro works out to $3.49 a month and the renewal to $139.08 a year, about $11.59 a month.
Are Black Friday VPN discount percentages real?
The math is usually accurate, but the comparison point is chosen by the provider. On NordVPN's page, the struck-through total matches its renewal rate spread over the deal's months. A large percentage tells you how much cheaper the intro is than the provider's own standard rate, not how it compares with other providers.
Should I buy a VPN through the App Store during a sale?
Only if the app store price is the same or better and you're comfortable with the store's refund rules. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark all route App Store refund requests to Apple. Buying on the provider's website usually means you get the provider's own 30-day (or longer) refund process.
